Recap
What… A… Game…!
The Belgian Lions opened their European Championship with a thriller against the home-squad Georgia.
From the start Belgium took command of the game and got a maximum lead of 12 points. But as expected, Georgia fought back in the second half of the fourth quarter, gradually reducing the gap to eventually take the 62-64 lead thanks to a McFadden (17 pts & 6 asts) who finally came to live for Georgia in the second half. Mwema quickly put the score back in balance though (67-67) with 5 consecutive points with 2 minutes left in the game.
In those final 2 minutes both teams fought to the 70-70 score as Belgium got the ball for the last offense but Obasohan unfortunately couldn’t get over the omni-present Mamukelashvili and so we headed into overtime.
Mamukelashvili (18 pts & 13 rebs) continued his strong play and opened the score in overtime with a put-back dunk after a turnover from Tabu. Tabu stayed cool and collected and immediately rectified his error with a three to put Belgium back in front (73-72). From 74-74 we then went to 76-76 when Tabu found the time had come to put the game away, draining a game-winning three with 3 seconds left to play. The heave by Sanadze in those final seconds ended up clancking off the rim and so Belgium got the hard-fought 79-76 victory.
Jonathan Tabu obviously was the hero of today’s game as he finished with 14 points. Jean-Marc Mwema had his outside shot dropping and also collected 14 pts. Ismael Bako had a very tough night against the Georgia bigs but still ended up with 11 pts & 6 rebs. Manu Lecomte was the last Belgian player to reach double-figures with his 10 pts & 5 asts. Retin Obasohan couldn’t get to the basket against the Georgian towers and had to settle for 9 pts but he did collect a game-high 6 stls.
Next game is on Saturday against Montenegro at 1:30pm.
